President, Investissement M&M
The National Angel Capital Organization is pleased to announce our 2010 Canadian Angel of the Year, Michel Brûlé.
Mr. Brûlé obtained both his Bachelor's (1971) and Master's degrees (1976) from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in Electrical Engineering. For close to 20 years, he has concurrently pursued two careers in academia and business. In both cases, this involved the development and management of R&D projects with high commercial potential. Along his academic track, he has held positions of full professor, Acting Research Dean and Research Laboratory Director at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) of the University of Québec.
Along his business track, he has been involved with the founding of six technology companies since 1979 holding senior management positions with each. He is the co-founder of InnoMediaLogic inc., the most successful achievement among his entrepreneurial endeavours. InnoMediaLogic was sold in July 2000 and this transaction was honored by the distinction of « Best VC deal in Canada for 2000 ». With the successful sale of two of his companies during the millennium year, he has acquired a solid experience in executing an “exit” strategy.
With M&M Investments, a private VC fund, Mr. Brûlé is providing a number of services based on his skills and experience to help start-up companies achieve a successful first or second round of financing. These services usually involve “seed” financing from M&M own private fund, business positioning and planning, company and product marketing, and negotiation with selected businesses and financing partners. Leveraged by M&M “seed” financing, more than CDN$40MM of operational equity financing has been raised to grow M&M companies.
Recognized as an Angel Investor “before his time”, Mr Brûlé actively participated in the launch and current operations of FIER Longueuil (a $15MM fund) and Anges Québec. Mr. Brûlé is a very active Board member of many private companies (Board Chairman on three companies). He chaired the Board of Corporation Valeo, a major Quebec effort to create commercial value from the R&D initiated by partnering Universities. He served for two years on Boomerang Tracking Inc.'s (BMG :TSE) Board of Directors and contributed actively to its valuable acquisition by LoJack (Nasdaq : LOJN).
The Canadian Angel of the Year is chosen by the National Angel Summit Committee and announced at the annual National Angel Summit. This year's award was presented by British Columbia's Mike Volker, 2009 Canadian Angel of the Year.
